Tales
From The Trails
This year has just flown by. I would like to summarize the
positive direction our Chapter took through the year with respect to safety.
First, we had eleven new member volunteers step up to the plate
and assume the responsibilities as our Chapter’s newest Road Captains. These individuals,
as well as our veteran Road Captains, deserve special recognition for all their
hard work and sacrifice in really truly making our Group ride
activities safe for our Chapter.
Second, I would like to give special thanks and recognition
to our Head Road Captain, Tom Ireland. Tom was appointed this year as Head Road
Captain. Tom has done a tremendous job of keeping the Road Captain program strong
and organized.
Third, we introduced to our newsletter in January 2006 a new
column called “Tales from the Trails”. The column is designed around safety questions
from our Chapter members relating to their own riding experiences and real life
situations out on the pavement “trails”. A few of our Road Captains wrote and
discussed in detail many safety issues observed in our Group rides.
These articles are archived on our website: tchog.org for
your review. This years articles covered various situations including merging
traffic situations; erratic rider skills during Group rides; steering/counter
steering; a basic tool kit for bikes; passing in Group rides; two-up riding considerations;
Group riding formations; traction loss and control and finally, cycle wisdom (humor).
So please forward any of your questions or observations to
the Safety Officer or any of our Road Captains.
Enjoy a Safe and Happy Holiday Season.
