What
basic tools should a motorcyclist carry on their bike?
Response:
I took
this question to Joe Walko, the Service Manager of the Treasure Coast HD shop. Joe
is an expert on our motorcycles with superior technical and mechanical
knowledge. Joe comments that many minor mechanical problems have been made much
worse by bike owners without much tool experience or a basic mechanical understanding
of motorcycles.
Joe
recommends:
- If a mechanical problem arises
where the safe operation of the motorcycle is questionable, then call for
help such as the Harley shop or Harley’s Roadside Assistance Program.
- If you are experienced with
tools and have a mechanical understanding of motorcycles or just wish to
carry a few basic tools, then Joe recommends a basic tool kit such as:
- Screwdriver with
interchangeable bits (include T-25 & T-27 torx.)
- Wire ties( good for
temporarily tying loose wires, cables and linkages)
- Tire pressure gauge
- Allen wrenches
- 10 mm wrench for battery
removal
- Double ended open ended
wrenches from 3/8” to 11/16” ( 3 wrenches)
- Electrical tape (easier to
store than duct tape and excellent for temporarily holding broken shift
linkage in place, broken mirror mounts, etc)
- Spare light bulbs (#1156 &
#1157 for turn signals and taillights)
Remember,
some problems can be corrected and avoided by doing a thorough pre-ride or post
ride check of the motorcycle (TCLOCS). It’s easier to repair a problem at home
than out on the road.
Ride
smart and have safe fun,
David
